Grand River Boulevard
East Lansing, Michigan

The design challenge was to accommodate 36,000 cars, 17,000 pedestrians, and 8,000 bicycles that converge daily on approximately a 1/4 mile section of Grand River Boulevard. This stretch also separates a commercial district from the campus of Michigan State University. The solution treated the street as a unifying element rather than as a barrier. The plan successfully accomplished this goal by using small architectural pavilions, mid-block crossings, and protective barriers for pedestrians at busy and dangerous intersections.
